Technology has improved our lives in many ways! However, when over-used, they present risks to our Vision and Eye Health. It is important to know that our eyes are relax when we look at things far away, but when we look at things near, our eye muscle need to work harder, to maintain sharp single vision.
For many of us, mobile mobiles, laptops, tablets and reading is a very integrated part of our everyday life, spending over 8-12hrs on them collectively. For our eyes, it will feel like carrying a heavy bag for the whole day without rest!
1. Extended period of looking at near objects.
Extended hours of looking at near objects are like carrying "weights" with our eyes, causing eye muscle to strain, eye pain, tired eyes and even headaches.
2. Reduce blinking
Blinking is important to keep our eyes healthy, comfortable & maintain clear vision. When we are absorbed into a task, whether it is for work or relaxation, we tend to blink less and this can dry up our eyes and causing gritty and even burning sensation.
3. Staying in a fixed position for too long
Staying in a poor and fixed position, reduces blood circulation to our neck and shoulders; these caused neck and shoulder stiffness.
4. Glare, Poor Contrast and Poor Environmental Lighting
Poor lighting can contribute to eye strain, it is important to set up your work and play environment in a way that is comfortable for your eyes.
1. Take Visual Break
Remember 20-20-20, for every 20 minutes of digital devices usage, look at something 20 feet (6m) away for 20 seconds
2. Blink more often
Simple but it works!!
3. Set up your work station ergonomically
Move laptop or monitor screen 20-28 inches from your eyes, adjust the screen to be slightly below eye level, reduce surrounding light, and adjust screen brightness
4. Get a Comprehensive Eye Exam
A comprehensive eye exam, will allow us to understand the underlying vision problem, advice you on necessary lifestyle modification and if required, Anti-Fatigue lenses can be prescribed to help relieve eye strain and regain happy eyes again!
Anti-fatigue lenses are specially designed to help relax our focusing system.
The upper portion of the lenses provides perfect distance vision (like normal distance lenses) with a subtle change in power towards the bottom of the lens. This subtle change at the bottom, actually make near object more relaxing for our eyes, thus relieving the strain of long hours of near work.
Specifically for Digital Eye Strain, we have designed our comprehensive eye exam to include tests to assess:
1. Eye Muscle's ability to focus accurately at near
2. Eye Muscle's range of focus
3. Eye Muscle's stamina
4. Eye Muscle's ability to maintain 1 single image
And others test as indicated
